Photograph of the tableaux 'Greek Poetry' performed at Balmoral Castle. The performers are (left to right): Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh playing a Greek maiden seated with her hands on her knees; Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh as Sappho standing on a plinth and playing a small Greek harp; The Honourable Ethel Cadogan as a Greek maiden seated, her chin resting on her hand and Frau Passavant standing in profile as a Greek maiden.
This tableaux was performed on Queen Victoria's 75th birthday (24th May 1894) in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle as part of a birthday surprise. Despite her enjoying the five tableaux that were performed, the Queen recorded in her journal that 'the stage was too dark, & I could not see well, even with glasses.'
